Текст для внеклассного чтения по английскому языку (5 класс)

Every afternoon, as they were coming from school, the children used to go and play in the Giant’s garden.
It was a large lovely garden, with soft green grass. Here and there over the grass stood beautiful flowers like stars, and there were twelve peach-trees ( персиковые деревья) that in the spring-time broke out into delicate (изящные) blossoms of pink and pearl, and in the autumn bore rich fruit. The birds sat on the trees and sang so sweetly that the children used to stop their games in order to listen to them. ‘How happy we are here!’ they cried to each other.
One day the Giant came back. He had been to visit his friend the Cornish (корнуэльский) ogre, and had stayed with him for seven years. After the seven years were over he had said all that he had to say, for his conversation was limited, and he determined to return to his own castle. When he arrived he saw the children playing in the garden.
‘What are you doing here?’ he cried in a very gruff (грозный) voice, and the children ran away.
‘My own garden is my own garden,’ said the Giant; ‘any one can understand that, and I will allow nobody to play in it but myself.’ So he built a high wall all round it, and put up a notice-board.

The poor children had now nowhere to play. They tried to play on the road, but the road was very dusty and full of hard stones, and they did not like it. They used to wander round the high wall when their lessons were over, and talk about the beautiful garden inside.
‘How happy we were there,’ they said to each other.
Then the Spring came, and all over the country there were little blossoms and little birds. Only in the garden of the Selfish Giant it was still Winter. The birds did not care to sing in it as there were no children, and the trees forgot to blossom. Once a beautiful flower put its head out from the grass, but when it saw the notice-board it was so sorry for the children that it slipped back into the ground again, and went off to sleep. The only people who were pleased were the Snow and the Frost. ‘Spring has forgotten this garden,’ they cried, ‘so we will live here all the year round.’ The Snow covered up the grass with her great white cloak, and the Frost painted all the trees silver. Then they invited the North Wind to stay with them, and he came. He was wrapped in furs, and he roared all day about the garden, and blew the chimney-pots down. ‘This is a delightful spot,’ he said, ‘we must ask the Hail (град) on a visit.’ So the Hail came. Every day for three hours he rattled on the roof of the castle till he broke most of the slates, and then he ran round and round the garden as fast as he could go. He was dressed in grey, and his breath was like ice.
‘I cannot understand why the Spring is so late in coming,’ said the Selfish Giant, as he sat at the window and looked out at his cold white garden; ‘I hope there will be a change in the weather.’
But the Spring never came, nor the Summer. The Autumn gave golden fruit to every garden, but to the Giant’s garden she gave none. ‘He is too selfish,’ she said. So it was always Winter there, and the North Wind, and the Hail, and the Frost, and the Snow danced about through the trees.

One morning the Giant was lying awake in bed when he heard some lovely music. It sounded so sweet to his ears that he thought it must be the King’s musicians passing by. It was really only a little linnet 9коноплянка) singing outside his window, but it was so long since he had heard a bird sing in his garden that it seemed to him to be the most beautiful music in the world. Then the Hail stopped dancing over his head, and the North Wind ceased roaring, and a delicious perfume came to him through the open casement. ‘I believe the Spring has come at last,’ said the Giant; and he jumped out of bed and looked out.
What did he see?
He saw a most wonderful sight. Through a little hole in the wall the children had crept in, and they were sitting in the branches of the trees. In every tree that he could see there was a little child. And the trees were so glad to have the children back again that they had covered themselves with blossoms, and were waving their arms gently above the children’s heads. The birds were flying about and twittering with delight, and the flowers were looking up through the green grass and laughing. It was a lovely scene, only in one corner it was still Winter. It was the farthest corner of the garden, and in it was standing a little boy. He was so small that he could not reach up to the branches of the tree, and he was wandering all round it, crying bitterly. The poor tree was still quite covered with frost and snow, and the North Wind was blowing and roaring above it. ‘Climb up! little boy,’ said the Tree, and it bent its branches down as low as it could; but the little boy was too tiny.
And the Giant’s heart melted as he looked out. ‘How selfish I have been!’ he said; ‘now I know why the Spring would not come here. I will put that poor little boy on the top of the tree, and then I will knock down the wall, and my garden shall be the children’s playground for ever and ever.’ He was really very sorry for what he had done.

So he crept downstairs and opened the front door quite softly, and went out into the garden. But when the children saw him they were so frightened that they all ran away, and the garden became Winter again. Only the little boy did not run, for his eyes were so full of tears that he died not see the Giant coming. And the Giant stole up behind him and took him gently in his hand, and put him up into the tree. And the tree broke at once into blossom, and the birds came and sang on it, and the little boy stretched out his two arms and flung them round the Giant’s neck, and kissed him. And the other children, when they saw that the Giant was not wicked any longer, came running back, and with them came the Spring. ‘It is your garden now, little children,’ said the Giant, and he took a great axe and knocked down the wall. And when the people were gong to market at twelve o’clock they found the Giant playing with the children in the most beautiful garden they had ever seen.
All day long they played, and in the evening they came to the Giant to bid him good-bye.
‘But where is your little companion?’ he said: ‘the boy I put into the tree.’ The Giant loved him the best because he had kissed him.
‘We don’t know,’ answered the children; ‘he has gone away.’
‘You must tell him to be sure and come here to-morrow,’ said the Giant. But the children said that they did not know where he lived, and had never seen him before; and the Giant felt very sad.
Every afternoon, when school was over, the children came and played with the Giant. But the little boy whom the Giant loved was never seen again. The Giant was very kind to all the children, yet he longed for his first little friend, and often spoke of him. ‘How I would like to see him!’ he used to say.
Years went over, and the Giant grew very old and feeble. He could not play about any more, so he sat in a huge armchair, and watched the children at their games, and admired his garden. ‘I have many beautiful flowers,’ he said; ‘but the children are the most beautiful flowers of all.’

One winter morning he looked out of his window as he was dressing. He did not hate the Winter now, for he knew that it was merely the Spring asleep, and that the flowers were resting.
Suddenly he rubbed his eyes in wonder, and looked and looked. It certainly was a marvelous sight. In the farthest corner of the garden was a tree quite covered with lovely white blossoms. Its branches were all golden, and silver fruit hung down from them, and underneath it stood the little boy he had loved.
Downstairs ran the Giant in great joy, and out into the garden. He hastened across the grass, and came near to the child. And when he came quite close his face grew red with anger, and he said, ‘Who hath dared to wound thee?’ For on the palms of the child’s hands were the prints of two nails, and the prints of two nails were on the little feet.
‘Who hath dared to wound thee?’ cried the Giant; ‘tell me, that I may take my big sword and slay him.’
‘Nay!’ answered the child; ‘but these are the wounds of Love.’
‘Who art thou?’ said the Giant, and a strange awe fell on him, and he knelt before the little child.
And the child smiled on the Giant, and said to him, ‘You let me play once in your garden, to-day you shall come with me to my garden, which is Paradise.’
And when the children ran in that afternoon, they found the Giant lying dead under the tree, all covered with white blossoms.

Animals in Winter

Read the text and find the answers to the questions below.

Shello_html_659f0b2.pngome animals “hibernate” for part or all of the winter. This is a special, very deep sleep. The animal’s body temperature drops, and its heartbeat and breathing slow down. It uses very little energy. In the fall, these animals get ready for winter by eating extra food and storing it as body fat. They use this fat for energy while hibernating. Some also store food like nuts or acorns to eat later in the winter. Bears, skunks, chipmunks, and some bats hibernate.
Insects look for winter shelter in holes in the ground, under the bark of trees, deep inside rotting logs or in any small crack they can find. One of the most interesting places is in a gall. A gall is a swelling on a plant. It is caused by certain insects, fungi or bacteria. They make a chemical that affects the plant’s growth in a small area, forming a lump. The gall becomes its maker’s home and food hello_html_1772fe85.pngsource.

Answer the questions:

1.    What does the word “hibernate” mean?
2.    When animals hibernate, what changes take place in their bodies?
3.    Why do you very rarely see insects over the winter season?
4.    Why do insects search out “galls” in the fall season?

Skating at a Local Ice Rink

Read the information below and then try to answer the questions at the bottom.

At Dufferin Grove Park, there is an ice rink that is used for skating lessons, shinny and pleasure skating. The NHL (National Hockey League) donated 50 pairs of skates earlier this year, and they’re spray-painted yellow. You can rent a pair of men’s hockey skates for $1.00 per day. You can also rent women’s ice skates for $1.00 a day. There are skating lessons available all around Toronto. Other cities in Ontario usually have skating rinks and lessons too. Dufferin Rink offers children’s skating lessons, and the teacher’s name is Mayssan. She learned how to skate on an artificial ice rink in Oman when she was a child. Mayssan became a very good skater, and now she teaches at the Dufferin Rink.

hello_html_m7f7f839b.jpg

When you go skating for the first time, make sure you wear warm socks, a warm hat, and lots of layers. Most rinks have hot drinks and snacks, but you can also bring your own snacks. Weekends are usually the busiest time of the week to go skating. Weekday nights are usually less crowded. If there has been any extreme weather, like rain, or hail, the ice rink may be temporarily closed until the Ice-resurfacer (Zamboni) can resurface the ice. Evening skating can be a lot of fun for the whole family. Most rinks have floodlights. At night the rink is lit up and bright. All Toronto outdoor rinks are free.

Questions:

1. Who donated 50 pairs of hockey skates to the Dufferin Grove Park?
2. How much does it cost to rent these skates?
3. What colour are they painted?
4. When does the skating season usually end?
5. What country did the skating teacher, Mayssan, learn how to skate in?
6. When is a good time to go skating for pleasure?
7. How should you dress for outdoor skating?
8. When might the ice rink be temporarily closed during the winter?

Chinese New Year

Read the text.

The Chinese New Year is the most important and happiest holiday of the year for Chinese and some other Asian people. For this holiday, families and friends always get together to say goodbye to the old year and welcome the new. There were three weeks of celebration in the traditional Chinese community, but it only lasts for one week now. There are many interesting and special activities and events in the Chinese New Year.

Thello_html_5b63c6d2.jpghe Chinese New Year does not fall on the same date each year, because the date of the Chinese New Year depends on the Chinese Lunar Calendar, which is based on the moon’s cycles. The Chinese New Year is always between late January and mid February.

During the Chinese New Year’s celebration, people have many traditional activities. The Chinese believe that they should do these traditional activities if they want to have a nice whole year. For example, they clean their house, pay off debts, buy new clothes, paint their house and windows and get a new haircut. These activities mean a new life and a new start.

On the Chinese New Year’s Eve, the New Year’s Eve dinner is a very important thing. Chinese families come together for a celebration dinner. This custom is called “surrounding the hearth”. Both children and adults eat together. The dinner is the best if eaten slowly and tasting each dish. There must be several dishes on the New Year’s Eve dinner, such as yearlong vegetables, chicken, fish, clams, New Year cakes and carrots. In my family, my mother always makes 10 or 11 kinds of dishes for the New Year Eve’s dinner. I like all dishes of my mother’s cooking, but my favorite dishes are New Year cakes and yearlong vegetables because they are only cooked on this date.

Thello_html_m6ec38307.jpghe Chinese New Year is the biggest holiday for the Chinese. There are many traditional activities and events on this date. Making new things, the New Year’s Eve Dinner, Red Packet, Red Couplets, the Lion Dance and fireworks are important and interesting activities. First, Red Packet is every child’s love at Chinese New Year. Adults always put some money into a red packet and give it to children and elderly people. The symbolic giving of the money represents a wish for luck and wealth in the coming year. Second, Red Couplets are one of the main forms in the Chinese New Year. Red Couplets are Chinese good luck sayings written on red paper and decorated on the walls and doors. Third, the Lion Dance is the greatest event for celebrating the Chinese New Year. The lion is a popular symbol for the Chinese. It symbolyzes is good luck and strength. In the Chinese New Year, some people dress up in the lion clothes, and dance on the streets. They bring good luck to the houses or businesses when the Lion dances visit. Forth, the Chinese like to shoot fireworks in the Chinese New Year. The symbolism is that the noise of the fireworks is supposed to scare away bad things and wake up the dragon that will fly into the sky to bring the spring. As you can see, there are many interesting activities for celebrating the Chinese New Year.

In my childhood, I liked the Chinese New Year much more than now because I should give Red Packet to children and elderly people now, and nobody wants to give money to me. But if someone asks me, “What is your favorite holiday?” I will say, “It is the Chinese New Year.” I believe all the Chinese like the Chinese New Year.

Answer the questions:

1. How long does the Chinese New Year celebration last?

2. What does the date of the New Year celebration depend on?

3. What Chinese custom in called “surrounding the hearth”? Why?

4. What other traditional activities do the Chinese have during the New Year celebration?

5. What are the symbolic representations of the Chinese New Year aimed at?

Inside Buckingham Palace.

THE PALACE.

There are two addresses in London that the whole world knows. One is 10 Downing Street, where the Prime Minister lives. The other is Buckingham Palace. This famous place, first built in 1703, is in the very center of London.

It is two places, not one. It is a family house, where children play and grow up. It is also the place where presidents, kings, and politicians go to meet the Queen.

Buckingham Palace is like a small town with a police station, two post offices, a hospital, a bar, two sport clubs, a disco, a cinema, and a swimming pool. There are 600 rooms and three miles of red carpet. Two men work full-time to look after the 300 clocks. About 700 people work in the Palace.

When the Queen gets up in the morning, seven people look after her. One starts her bath, one prepares her clothes, and one feed the Royal dogs. She has eight or nine dogs, and they sleep in their own bedroom near the Queen’s bedroom .Two people bring her breakfast. She has coffee from Harrods, toast, and eggs. Every day for fifteen minutes, a piper plays Scottish music outside her room and the Queen reads The Times.

Every Tuesday evening, she meets the Prime Minister. They talk about world news and have a drink, perhaps a gin and tonic or a whisky.

When the Queen invites a lot of people for dinner, it takes three days to prepare the table and three days to the washing up. Everybody has five glasses: one for red wine, one for white wine, one for water, one for port, and one for liqueur. During the first and second courses, the Queen speaks to the person on her left and then she speaks to the person on her right for the rest of the meal. When the Queen finishes her food, everybody finishes, and it is time for the next course!

ANSWER THE QUESTIONS.

  1. Buckingham Palace is two places, not one. How?
  2. Why it is like a small town?
  3. Are there a lot of clocks?
  4. How many dogs does the Queen have?
  5. What newspaper does she read?
  6. What sort of music does the piper play?
  7. Why do people have five glasses on the table?
  8. Who does the Queen speak to during a meal?

Charles Dickens (1812-1870)

Charles Dickens is one  of the greatest novelists in the English language. He wrote about the real world of Victorian England and many of his characters were not rich, middle-class ladies and gentlemen, but poor and hungry people.

Dickens the child

His family lived in London. His father was a clerk in an office. It was a good job, but he always spent more money than he earned and he was often in debt. There were eight children in the family, so life was hard.

Charles went to school and his teachers thought he was very clever. But suddenly, when he was eleven, his father went to prison for his debts and the family went too.Only Charles didn’t go to prison. He went to work in a factory, where he washed bottles. He worked ten hours a day and earned six shillings (30 pence) a week. Every night, after work, he worked four miles back to his room. Charles hated it and never forgot the experience . He used it in many novels, especially David Copperfield and Oliver Twist.

When he was sixteen, he started work for a newspaper. He visited law courts and the House of Parliament. Soon he was one of the Morning Chronicle’s best journalists. He also wrote short stories for magazines. These were funny descriptions of the people that he met. Dickens characters were full of colour and life – good people were very good and bad people were horrible. His books became popular in many countries and he spent a lot of time abroad, in America, Italy, and Switzerland.

Dickens had ten children, but he didn’t have a happy family life. He was successful in his work but not at home, and his wife left him. He never stopped writing and traveling, and he died very suddenly in 1870.

Answer the questions.

  1. How old was Dickens when he died?
  2. How many brothers and sisters did he have?
  3. Was he good at school?
  4. Why did he leave school when he was eleven?

But sometimes it is difficult to listen it without good musical education. Without it such music is not so case to interpret. The tickets to music halls and concerts of classical music are expensive. It’s not available to everybody. Pop music becomes cutely extremely fashionable among young people. Madonna, Michael Jackson and “Spice girls” and. “Backstreet Boys” give an example of what teenagers prefer to listen to. It even determines there style and fashion. Teenagers to imitate there their favorite musicians in appearance, dress and lifestyles.

Body decorations such as rings, necklaces (ожерелье) , bracelets, brooches (брошь), and others are called jewellery (драгоценности). Girls and women like to wear different accessories and make up. There many fashion secrets which help women to look great. If you want to learn these secrets there is possibility for you to read beautiful fashion magazines and to see prestigious collections of leading international fashion designers. Everybody in the world knows the names of famous designers Oliver Lapidius, Versace, Gucci. Their clothes are really fantastic. But not many girls and women can afford to buy them. Anyway there always the way to look great. One should have taste and remember that the choice of wearing this or that thing often depends of the situation. If you go to the theatre or to a party you can use make-up and wear expensive jewelry . For example gold charm bracelet, an elegant pearl necklace diamond (алмаз, бриллиант) earrings or a fashionable hair clip. Use a lipstick, mascara, shadows, powder blush. But don’t forget that accessories and cosmetics aren’t enough to look beautiful. Take care of your hair, of your body and skin every day.

Clothes are immediate, they tell us about people. Famous people usually set the trance. Clothes can be light drugs many teenagers easily become addicted (пристраститься).

Everyone in my class is really fashionable. They spend a lot of time talking about clothes that they are going to spend their money on. Many friends of mine think I’m untrendy. But frankly speaking fashion is not very important for me. Fashion comes and goes . To my mind looking clean and tidy is more important than looking stylish. I prefer clothes which are traditional in design that I feel comfortable in. My favourite clothes are…………  I think that following fashion doesn’t mean having good taste. If I had a lot of money I would buy clothes which are classical in design because they never go out of fashion. But I would  rather buy  video cassettes and some interesting books.

Mother Teresa.

Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu was born in Skopje, in Yugoslavia, in 1910. Her family were all Albania, but she said, «The people of the world are my people,» She first went to Ireland as a young nun when she was eighteen and learned English. After that she went to India, first to Ben gal and then to Calcutta. She called herself «Teresa» after Saint Therese. She lived in a convent and taught young Indian girls. One day in 1946 on a train to Darjeeling, a voice inside her said, «You must leave )tour convent and help the poorest people in India.» She bought a cheap sari (an India rode) from a market. Her Archbishop blessed it and then she started her work in Calcutta. Soon many others joined her. They called themselves the Missionaries of Charity. Like Mother Teresa, they wore Indian saris. All her life she has been helping everyone who is ill, dirty, poor, or dying. She loved them all. In 1979 she won the Nobel Peace Prize. She says, «To feel no one wants you; to feel no one loves You… that’s the worst sickness in life.»

The Main Street of Moscow

Tverskaya Street is the main street of the Russian capital. It is one of the longest and the busiest streets of the city. There are many hotels, shops and supermarkets in it. Tverskaya Street is famous for its fine tall houses, beautiful monuments, wide squares, cinemas and theatres which are in or nearby.

Hundreds of years ago from Red Square there was a road to Tver. Tver is an old Russian city to the North of Moscow. Tverskaya Street is where this road used to be and that fact explains its name. Tverskaya is a wide street and in some places the street is sixty metres wide.

At the beginning of Tverskaya Street you can see the hotel «Natsional». If we walk up the street on the same side we’ll see the building of the Central Telegraph and on the opposite side the monument to Yuri Dolgoruky, the founder of Moscow. The monument is situated in a beautiful little square with some trees in it. Let’s walk up Tverskaya Street. Soon we’ll reach Pushkin Square.

In Pushkin Square we can see the famous monument to Alexander Pushkin, the greatest Russian poet. Pushkin was born in Moscow and spent the first years of his life in this city. When he became very famous and lived in St. Petersburg he often visited Moscow. Pushkin loved his native city and wrote about it in his poems. Pushkin Square is very beautiful. There is a fountain in it near the monument. The monument itself appeared in Moscow in 1880. It is the work of the famous Opekushin and one of the finest monuments in Moscow.

On the opposite side further up Tverskaya Street there is an old red building. It used to be the English Club but now it is the Museum of the Revolution.

You can see the monument to Vladimir Mayakovsky in Triumfalnaya Square. Moscow Concert Hall is situated in it.

The end is near Belorussian railway station. You can see the monument to Maxim Gorky in the square in front of the railway station.

My Naughty Little Sister at the Birthday Party

(After Dorothy Edwards)

There was a little boy who lived in our street. His name was Tom. My little sister liked to play with him. So they often played in our yard and in our garden.

But Tom was a naughty little boy and my sister was a naughty little girl. They walked all over the flowers and picked green apples and broke their toys and broke my toys. One day they washed my doll in dirty water and the next day they put Tom’s Teddy Bear in the middle of the flower-bed.

One day Tom came to our house with a letter for my sister. He said to Nancy: “This is a letter for you from my mother. Please come to my birthday party. We shall have tea and a big birthday cake”.

“I like birthday cakes”, said my little sister. She put on her best dress and her white socks and white shoes.

“Don’t forget to say ‘Please’ and ‘Thank you,’ ” said my mother.

When my little sister came to the birthday party, she said to Tom’s mother: “How do you do? I want some birthday cake.”

Tom’s mother laughed and said: “Soon all the children will come, and then you can have the birthday cake.”

Then the other children came and they all played in the garden. They played hide-and-seek. They sang songs and danced. But my little sister did not want to play. She did not want to dance and she did not want to play.

“I can show you the birthday cake,” she said.

So they went to the dining room, there on the table they saw a beautiful birthday cake with chocolate roses on it.

“Oh, I like chocolate roses very much”, said my naughty little sister.

“I can give you a little rose,” said Tom. He gave my sister one little rose, and she ate it up. Then he took one rose and ate it up. My sister ate three roses, and Tom ate three roses. They took the roses with their hands, and there was chocolate on their hands and on their faces. Then they went into the garden to play with other children.

When Tom’s mother saw them, she did not ask any questions. She went to the dining-room and looked at the birthday cake. She was very angry.

Tom’s mother told Tom to go to bed. And she told my sister to go home.

My sister is not a little girl now, but she does not like chocolate roses even today.

The Policeman and the Thief

In a small town far away, a man stole some money from a house. The police began to look for the thief, and they found him in two days. They brought him to the police station and found some of the money in his coat.

There was a new policeman at the police station, and they wanted to gibe him some work. «Take this thief to the city», said one of them. «You must go there by train, and it goes very soon. Don’t be late».

The policeman and the thief set out along the road to the station. On their way they came to a shop. In this shop bread was sold.

«We have no food and we must eat something in the train,» said the thief. «It’s a long way to the city and it will take a long time. I’ll go into this shop and buy some bread. Then you and I can eat it in the train. Wait here for me.» The policeman was glad. «I’ll have some food in the train,» he thought. «Be quick,» he said to the thief. «We haven’t much time.»

The thief went into the shop, and the policeman waited in the street for a long time. But then he began to think about the train, and at last he went into the shop.

«Where’s that man who came in here to buy some bread?» asked the policeman.

«Oh, he went out of the back door», said the shopkeeper.

The policeman ran out of the back door, but he could not se the thief. He ran down the road, but he could not find him. So he had to go back to the police station and tell the others about it. They were very angry with him and he was very unhappy.

All the police of the town began to look for the thief again, and they soon caught him. They brought him back to the police station and called the same policeman.

«Now,» said one of them angrily, «take him to the city, and don’t lose him again!»

The policeman and the thief set out again along the same road to the station, and they came to the same shop.

«Wait here,» said the thief. «I want to go into that shop and buy some bread for our journey.»

«Oh, no,» said the policeman. «You did that before, and you ran away. This time, I’ll go into the shop and buy the bread, and you must wait here for me.»
