Прочитайте текст и выполните задание после текста
Tea – leaves.
Many years ago people didn’t know about tea in European countries. Many people didn’t even know the word “tea”, though drinking was very popular in the East.
Once a young sailor came back from India. He returned from a far-away country & brought his mother a gift. He brought her a box of tea. The old woman didn’t know anything about tea, but she liked the smell, & invited all her friends to come & try it. When her guests arrived, she invited them to the dining table. The old woman gave them cakes & fruit & tea-leaves.
When the sailor entered the room & saw a big plate with the tea-leaves, he understood everything. He smiled when he saw his mother’s friends. They were eating tea-leaves with butter & salt. They pretended they liked it, but it was clear they didn’t enjoy eating the leaves.
“Where is the tea, Mother?” the sailor asked. His mother pointed to the plate in the middle of the table. “No, this is only the leaves of the tea,” the sailor said. “Where is the water?”
“The water?” his mother said. “I didn’t know what to do & threw the water away, of course.”

HOW PENGUINS CAME ON AN ISLAND
- The poor men grew very thin and weak. They were beginning to lose all hope of life, when great flocks of penguins came to the beach. Now the sailors could get a lot of penguin eggs which were good to eat. So the penguins saved their lives. The penguins stayed for about three months; when their young ones could swim, they all disappeared one night in the direction of the south.
- Far out in the Atlantic Ocean, about midway between Africa and South America and over a thousand miles from the land, there is a group of three small islands.
- Some time after a ship landed there, and the sailors left the island. They told many interesting things about penguins.
- For six months the sailors lived very well. They killed many seals and hunted wild pigs and goats. Then a sad accident happened: there was a terrible storm in the sea and their ship sank with all their meat and guns. Now they were shut up in that little island. Winter was coming on, and they had very little food to eat.
- Two sailors, who knew and liked this peaceful place, decided to live there for some time. There were very many seals there, and they could catch and kill them for food. They built a hut near the shore, where there was a beautiful waterfall of sweet spring water. They could climb up high hills where there were wild pigs and goats.

THE PAINTER
On 25 October 1881 a little boy was born in Malaga, Spain. It was a difficult birth and to help him breathe, cigar smoke was blown into his nose! But despite being the youngest ever smoker, this baby grew up to be one of the 20th century’s greatest painters – Pablo Picasso.
Picasso showed his truly exeptional talent from a very young age. He learned to draw before he could talk. He was the only son in the family and very good-looking, so he was thoroughly spoilt. He hated school and often refused to go unless his doting parents allowed him to take one of his father’s pet pigeons with him!
Apart from pigeons, his great love was art, and when in 1891 his father, who was an amateur artist, got a job as a drawing teacher at a college, Pablo went with him to the college. He often watched his father paint and sometimes was allowed to help. One evening his father was painting a picture of their pigeons when he had to leave the room. He returned to find that Pablo had completed the picture, and it was so amazingly beautiful that he gave his son his own palette and brushes and never painted again. Pablo was just 13.
From then onwards there was no stopping him. Many people realized that he was a genius but he disappointed those who wanted him to become a traditional painter. He was always breaking rules of artistic tradition and shocked the public with his strange and powerful pictures. He is probably best known for his “Cubist” pictures, which used only simple geometric shapes.
Pablo created over 6000 paintings, drawings and sculptures. Today a “Picasso” costs several million pounds. Once, when the French Minister of Culture was visiting Picasso, the artist accidentally split some paint on the Minister’s trousers, Picasso apologized and wanted to pay for them to be cleaned, but the Minister said, “Non! Please, Monsieur Picasso, just sign my trousers!”
Picasso died of heart failure during an attack of influenza in 1973. Dictionaries are not allowed

Reading Comprehension Test for 9th Form Students
Text 4: In Washington, D. C., 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue is a very special address. It is the
address of the White House, the home of the president of the United states. Originally the White House was gray and was called the Presidential Palace. It was built from 1792 to 1800. At this time, the city of Washington itself was being built. It was to be the nation’s new capital city. George Washington, the first president, and Pierre Charles L’Enfant, a French engineer, chose the place for the new city. L’Enfant then planned the city. The president’s home was an important part of the plan. A contest was held to pick a design for the president’s home. An architect named James Hoban won. He designed a large three-story house of gray stone.
President Washington never lived in the Presidential Palace. The first president to live there was John Adams, the second president of the United States, and his wife. Mrs. Adams did not really like her new house. In her letters, she often complained about the cold. Fifty fireplaces were not enough to keep the house warm! In 1812 the United States and Britain went to war. In 1814 the British invaded Washington. They burned many buildings, including the Presidential Palace. After the war James Hoban, the original architect, partially rebuilt the president’s home. To cover the marks of the fire, the building was painted white. Before long it became known as the White House. The White House is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the United States. Every year more than 1.5 million visitors go through the five rooms that are open to the public.
Questions (on your answer sheet circle + if the statement is true, — if it is false)
- The White House was originally gray.
- James Hoban was a French Engineer.
- It took ten years to build the Presidential Palace.
- George Washington lived in the White House first.
- Mrs. Adams complained about the cold.
- The United States and Britain used to be enemies.
- Pierre Charles L’Enfant won the design contest.
- Britain invaded Washington.
- After the war, not all of the White House needed to be rebuilt, but it did need to be partially rebuilt.

Shopping in America at the Mall
Malls are popular places for Americans to go shopping. Some people spend so much time at malls that they
are called «mall rats.» Mall rats «shop until they drop» in the hundreds of stores under one roof.
People like malls for
many reasons. They feel safe because malls have police stations or private security guards.
Parking is usually free
and the weather inside is always fine. The newest malls have beautiful rest areas with waterfalls and palm trees. The
largest mall in the United States is the Mall of America in Minnesota. It covers 4.2 million square feet. It has 350
stores, eight nightclubs, and a seven-acre amusement park! There are parking spaces for 12,750 cars. About 750,000
people shop there every week. The first indoor mall in the United States was built in 1965 in Edina, Minnesota.
People loved doing their shopping all in one place. Many more malls were built over the country.
Now, malls are like
town centers where people come to do many things. They shop, of course. They also eat in food courts that have food
from all over the world. They see movies at multiplex theaters. Some people even get their daily exercise by doing the
new sport of «mall walking.» Others go to malls to meet friends. In some malls, people can see a doctor or a dentist
and even attend church. In other words, people can do just about anything in malls. The latest trend is condo-malls.
Now residents can actually live in their favorite shopping center. For a mall rat this is a dream come true.

LISTENING COMPREHENSION TASKS
Stress
Stress is important. We all need a certain amount of it in order to lead fulfilling lives. However, if we have too much of it, it can have the opposite effect. Some people can tolerate greater levels of stress than others, but most of us will experience it at some time in our lives. It is therefore a good idea to learn a few stress management techniques. Identifying the cause of the problem we have, so that we can solve it more effectively, is one of the first steps toward reducing stress. The second is talking to a person you can trust, who will listen and, if necessary, give you some positive advice. Not only are smoking and drinking harmful to our health, they actually increase stress rather than reduce it. So, next time you want to relax, instead of reaching for that glass of wine or a cigarette, have a warm bath or go for a walk.
Walking has more than health benefits, it helps you think more clearly too. Pets have a calming influence on us, unless they make noise which irritates us. In fact, unwanted noises should be avoided as much as possible. On the other hand, laughter is one of the best ways to make yourself feel considerably better.

I. Прочитайте текст и выберите наиболее подходящий для него заголовок
A. THE CAT FAMILY
B. A DAY OF A LION
C. KING OF ANIMALS
People often say that the lion is the symbol of strength. We say “strong as a lion”, or “lion-hearted”. Lions are members of the cat family. As a rule, a lion is about nine feet long and its weight is about 400 or 500 pounds. The lion’s voice is a roar or a growl. Unlike other cats, it can swim in deep water. Lions like to live in the open area and they don’t like to live in forests. They drink once a day, that’s why they always live near some water. Lions may live alone or in pairs, or in groups which are known as “prides”. Lions hunt at night and have a rest during the day.
